FX Films – Wedding Cinematography » Wedding Video Training UK, Wedding Cinematography

I offer any budding wedding videographer / editor / photographer personal 1-to-1 training, to help you develop and enhance your video / film skills, and to help head you away from ‘videographer’ and towards ‘cinematographer / filmmaker’ (from ‘wedding video’ to ‘cinematic wedding film’).

It is a bespoke service where you decide exactly what you would like to learn (basic or advanced level), and over how many sessions (half-day or full-day slots).

I am at advanced level with edting software, and can help guide you with whatever you use (e.g. Adobe CC and below; Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop). With regards cameras, camcorders, and equipment, I have personally owned/used Canon 5D MkIII, Sony A7sii, Canon 5D MkII, Canon 7D, Canon 550D, Canon 60D, Go Pro Hero HD, Canon XH-A1, Canon XF300 and XF305, Sony FX1, Sony Z1, Sony EX1, Canon HV20 and HV30, Lumix GF1, Glidetrack 1m, Glidetrack Shooter, Glidecam, LCDVF, jibs / cranes, tripods, monopods, lights, lenses, microphones … and more.

What you could learn as part of your training

• Transition from ‘wedding video’ to ‘cinematic wedding film’
• Suitable filming and editing workflow ideas for long form and short form edits (with full examples to go through)
• Filming techniques (e.g. cinematic gliding, DOF, camera angles) (with behind-the-scenes footage to show)
• Suitable DSLR, mirrorless, camcorder and audio settings for different situations
• Working with High-Definition footage – keeping it crisp and clear
• Creative editing techniques and editing with ’emotion’ in mind
• In-depth colour-grading tuition (creating/tweaking your own presets, within your NLE and with 3rd party plugins like ‘Magic Bullets Looks’)
• Help with marketing/advertising/branding-awareness/reputation
• and more …

You can come to my private office, based in Oxford (refreshments and lunch provided), or I can become mobile and bring my HD-editing laptop system and, if feasible, cameras + equipment to you.

For further discussion and to find out my competitive rates, please contact me via the contact page.

Rachel and Phil AccesiMarch 21, 2012 - 12:04 am

Phil and I were very impressed with your down-to-earth approach. You made us feel very comfortable and at ease and we felt we could ask any question we liked without being made to feel daft – something which is very important to us. Your passion for what you do and enthusiasm for creating something artistic, with a cinematic feel and personal touches was so evident, it was infectious!! You were patient and helpful, showing us hints and tips from what you had learnt along the way and we came away from our time with you, almost as if our eyes had been opened to lots of possibilities that we could both reach and aspire to. We are so grateful for your time and we have a renewed excitement for what we do (and an even huger shopping list for what we need to do it!!) and how we can make it better…we still talk about it now.

I spent a day with Richard Wakefield of FX Films. As a novice to wedding videography, I had a few problems with camera handling, editing, DVD building, customer service, business decisions, dealing with clients, the right equipment to buy. In short, how to be a successful videographer from A-Z. With his professional yet easy manner,he covered all what it takes to be in the business. It was really worth the investment..

Martin DMarch 21, 2012 - 12:05 am

Spent a day with Richard at FX Films. His advice on what equipment to buy? That alone was worth the cost of the course and has saved me making expensive mistakes in the future. You know the phrase “it does what it says on the tin”. That sums up Richard’s course. EVERYTHING he advertises is covered on a one to one basis that not only makes sure you understand and learn, but gives you the perfect opportunity to have your questions answered by a man who knows exactly what he’s talking about. His generosity in sharing his incredible knowledge of videography is refreshing and when you see how good his work is, you just know how well he understands this business. His follow up e-mails are instructive and invaluable. I can’t recommend the course highly enough and it was wonderful to know that not only had I spent my money wisely gaining an incredible insight into Richard’s work but it has given me the confidence to know that I WILL succeed in my ambition to be a good videographer.

Mark BMarch 21, 2012 - 12:06 am

Having a 1-to-1 training with Richard from FX Films was a great experience. With his knowledge of the industry and personal experience over several years, he can certainly help many people with various experience levels. Some of his tips and tricks will save me hours of researching and editing! His storyboard illustrations used to describe various scenarios or layouts has given me confidence in many of the unknowns, and filming techniques which I’m sure I will encounter at weddings in future. Richard is very approachable and open to any questions. He’s an excellent contact to have

I am very keen to push ahead with my own wedding video business as soon as possible.
At the moment I am getting to grips with the Canon XL2 camera but I need to spend a day with an experienced person(s) like yourself to learn the dicipline of getting the best out a one day wedding shoot including how best to prepare and structure the day, best camera shots and techniques.
Be warned I am a total beginner but you seem like the kind of guys that can get me off to a good start.

I just wanted to THANK YOU for all that you have taught me. If it were not for you, i would not have the small success that i have today. They are small, but a start towards my ultimate goal of working in the documentary film industry. So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!

Had a blast, wanted to let you know! The time we spent together really meant so much on the day when I had to step up to the plate.

Cannot tell you how much fun I had, still blown away that I could do a wedding straight after spending some time with you… still scratching my head on how that happened! J

I already have all the shots in my mind I want to use for my reel!! Already did the edit in my mind…lol

Exciting times ahead for us!

PS: Your latest Nautical Wedding video has got me thinking in the back of my mind of using a jib, brings so much production value…
You are still teaching me, even in your absence.

Hi Richard
Could you let me have an idea of what you would charge for me and possibly my husband to spend a day with you to improve the way we film weddings. We have been filming weddings for a number of years but feel they are tired and unexciting and am looking for ways to improve them. I am also looking to invest in a dslr to use at weddings and am looking for guidance on the differences between filming with a camcorder and a dslr.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hope you are doing well. I’ve come across your website through the wedfilm website that I visited today.

I’m a complete novice with handling video-cams/DSLR for shooting video. My experience in shooting video is limited to small home videos/travel videos shot with my camera.

I’m very keen to learn the skill of wedding cinematography as I’m fascinated by the idea of being able to capture precious moments of someone’s life and to help them re-visit those memories through a motion video.

Please help by providing costs for the 1:1 course and your availability for the same in Jan/Feb 2013.

I look forward to hear from you.

It’s thanks to your visit that I have completely changed the way I run my business and the results are an increase in bookings and a BIG increase in positive feedback…So just to thank you again for your support.

Lee EvansFebruary 22, 2013 - 4:26 pm

Just wanted to thank you for a great day and has been quite inspirational. The challenge of learning something new and doing things in a new way has been quite inspirational. I’m especially taken with the short form edit, it’s just what I’ve been after from day one, and yes I can see it takes quite a lot of clever placement, but it actually look less work than what I’m doing, and you have much better control to ‘tell a story’ of the day without being intrusive – thank you.

Anyway we would highly recommend actually coming to visit you as it made all the difference just seeing how at easily you handled the camera more or less with not additional attachments.

Good Morning,

I did film at uni and have just come back from South East Asia where I was working as a videographer.

I am looking to get into Wedding Videography now that I am back in the UK and have no idea how to go about it! I’d like to assist for a while rather than set up my own business. But your training course looks like it could be beneficial for me at this point in my career.

Could you let me know some more details about the course please? Such as how much does it cost and how long is it etc?

Let me know,

NavitaOctober 27, 2014 - 2:17 pm

I’m writing regarding any additional information you could provide as to what the training involves, where you are based, pricing, and next availability?

I graduated in Marketing with Advertising from University this summer, and I am looking to pursue a career within wedding cinematography, along with a friend. As you can imagine we have no filming experience, or relevant qualifications within filming. We started off creating Instagram videos for fun, during our final year of university we were nominated to film content and edit the videos required for any group assignments, as our enthusiasm was obvious. Finishing university we realised videography was our calling and working as a team has only proved to be a success! To be a part of such an amazing journey of love would be a dream, and to create a piece of art that the couple can relive over and over, is what would make it so rewarding for us! As a team we would want to start our own wedding filming company…we just need a helping hand in the right direction.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Kind regards,

Hi Richard, I stumbled across this site as iv been doing videography for a couple of years now and feel the need that I need more training when shooting the camera. I trained for two yrs at apple learning final cut and motion 5. In addition I’ve learned after effects and encore (Having in mind iv only scratched the surface with these programmes lol) I with the help of my wife have created my company called iconic productions and with the help of my family, have had a good amount of work ie christenings, engagements and weddings. But I feel that I need help from a real professional because I want the cinematic feel with my work and not just another wedding guy with amerture vids. Ps I have created a Twitter, Instagram and fcbk account for iconic pro and will have a web site up soon, everything will go live as soon as I feel I’m completely confident enough to do so,iv realised in this business that there are no room for errors, that’s why in two years iv taken things slow but have learned so so much! thankyou and sorry for the thesis lol I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Richard

my wife Alison & I have been wedding photographers for the past 3 years. I usually 2nd shoot for Alison and have been considering branching out to include video. I don’t want to produce full-length video of the entire day but would like to be able to use my Canon 5D iii to capture small clips throughout the day and compile a highlights reel. I have tried and failed miserably so it’s time to call in the experts!

I’d be interested in a 1-2-1 day at your place in Oxford, the question is when could we do that and how much would it cost?

I am a wedding photographer but am looking at getting into wedding video. I have no real experience of using video and currently have two Nikon D750. Can you give me an idea of what training you think would be best for me and also the cost.

thank you

Many thanks,

Looking to build my business, I work solo as a Photographer. I am looking to have a promo video to embed on my own site aswell as learn about how I can bring some video into my own weddings and/or hang it together to make it more interesting to view.

FAO Marketing,

Hope you are well.

We will be covering the following on Wedding Bliss in our May/June issue of PRO Moviemaker and as this is relevant to you I thought you might like to advertise and be included editorially.

Please let me know your thoughts.
