What started out as a silly ‘we’ll-never-do-it’ idea, actually turned into reality. (Most people I know will say I never turn down a challenge!)
My fiancée, Kate, and I have created our own ‘Save The Date’ wedding invitation clip, to email out to our chosen wedding guests. It doesn’t replace official wedding invitations, but it certainly is a fun and memorable visual-fest to show them our venue and tell them the date.
The story behind the clip:
We wanted something never seen before, and it HAD to be original, and funny.
So, just a couple of months ago I had the most random idea of making small character puppets for our own adult heads. But neither myself or Kate wanted to create these puppet bodies ourselves so we tried to source something appropriate. I’m afraid to say there was only solution… to buy full puppets…and cut the heads off. A surreal and sorry moment
We then sourced wedding outfits from a completely different make of puppet, and checked in advance that they would fit (ok, the shoes were a difficult fit, but everything else was fine!)
On the day of filming, we used some black bedsheets (complete with holes for our heads and puppet hand sticks), tripod stands, DSLR cameras, lights, and audio recorders…and away we went.
But because we were the only 2 present in the room, we (I!) literally had to press record on the DSLR, rush my outfit on and start our improvised performance. Hence my sweaty forehead. I was so hot wearing 2 black scarves (to hide my neck), and facing a pro light! Kate on the other hand looks fine! We even set a big mirror up behind the DSLR so we could catch glimpse of ourselves as we tried out silly mannerisms!
The story behind the editing:
As with most of my edits, I had the vision in my head and knew of ways to piece it altogether.
Kate just had to trust me during filming, when I said things like ’look up when we talk about the venue because I will cut to a wide shot showing it’…and she must have thought I had really lost the plot when I said about a big fire explosion transition between normal attire and wedding attire!
<techy bit, sorry> Editing consisted of many many nested sequences, pitch adjustments to the audio, colour-grading, suitable sfx and song choice, and many tweaks … but I got there in the end!
The ‘Save The Date’ clip:
So now sit back and enjoy our ‘Save The Date’ clip…and yes, you’ll be laughing AT us, and not WITH us
And here are some behind-the-scenes photos for you too!
